Supervised Independent Living (SIL) is a type of voluntary Extended Foster Care placement where young adults can live on their own under a supervised independent living setting. A young adult in SIL still receives case management and support services provided by a Department of Family & Protective Services (DFPS) contracted provider to help them become independent and self-sufficient. They are not supervised 24 hours a day by an adult and have increased responsibilities.
About the Supervised Student Independent Living (SIL) Program at UT Austin
UT Austin, in partnership with DFPS, has launched a SIL program as of Fall 2024. The program allows UT Austin students aged 18-21 who are in Extended Foster Care and using their State College Tuition Waiver to have their Housing and Meal Plan costs covered.
Students in SIL receive:
Reimbursement for the cost of housing (on or off-campus)*
A monthly $90 living stipend
One-on-one & community support through the Horns Helping Horns program.
For eligibility requirements for extended foster care, visit the DFPS website. If you have questions or are interested in applying for SIL, please contact the HHH Program Coordinator, Jessica Timpson, or your caseworker.
